With Billy’s Metric Builder, you can create custom metrics that fit your specific analysis needs. Perfect for tracking metrics that are not included by default but are essential for your reporting. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you get started.

How to get there?

Navigate to the channel- or paid performance dashboard and click on the 'Columns' button to build a metric for your table, or click on the 'Metrics' dropdown top right to build a metric card.

You are directed to the Metric Builder dashboard.

Create your metric

To create a metric, click 'Create New Metric’.

Start by giving your metric a name (this name needs to be unique) and determine whether it is a number, a percentage, or a value.

In the builder, you can start typing your formula. You can simply type the metrics you require or click on the '+ Metric' icon in the bar below. You can complete the formula by adding numbers and operators, think of the builder as a calculator.

Each element in the builder has its own color for clarity:

  • Metric = green

  • Number = blue

  • Operator = plain (no color)

To save your metric, click the 'Create Metric' button; your metric is now ready to use in your analysis!

Understanding the 'Treat Higher Value as Better' Option

The 'Treat higher value as better' checkbox in the Metric Builder allows you to define whether an increase in your custom metric should be considered positive or negative. For instance, when calculating Return on Ad Spend (ROAS), a higher value indicates better performance, so you would check this box. Conversely, for Cost Per Acquisition (CPA), a lower value signifies better efficiency, so you would leave the box unchecked. This feature ensures that your custom metrics align with your performance goals, providing clarity in your analysis.

Note: When creating custom metrics, please note that numbers may differ between the Channel- and the Paid Performance Dashboard, as each includes a different set of channels.

Once you've built your own metric in Billy Grace, you won't be able to edit it afterwards. But don’t worry, you can always duplicate and adjust the copy.

Why can't I adjust my custom metric?

We’ve made this choice deliberately. In shared accounts, it’s important that everyone is looking at the same version of a metric. If one person changes it without others knowing, it could lead to confusion in your analysis.

Error States in the Metric Builder

Sometimes, an error message may appear while using the Metric Builder. This usually means something’s missing or not quite right. Here’s what to check:

  • Formula issue: The formula you entered doesn’t produce a valid result. Double-check your logic and syntax.

  • Metric name issue: Every metric needs a unique name. Make sure you have filled in a name and a name that it’s not already in use.
